The C.M. Russell Museum
After fishing the Missouri River why not visit the C.M. Russell Museum is one of the nation’s finest museums of American Western art and the home of the most complete collection of Charlie Russell art and memorabilia in the world.
Russell’s artwork portrays the daily life of the range cowboy and the Plains Indian, the monumental landscapes of the Montana wilderness and its sovereign inhabitants—the bison, elk, bear, and wolf—all reflected through the artist’s personal experience during the closing days of the western frontier. Russell’s whimsical side is revealed in tiny, playful figures of gnomes, elves, and caricatures fashioned out of clay, wax, plaster, and bark.
The permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects also includes the works of such well-known artists as O. C. Seltzer, Winold Reiss, J. H. Sharp, E. E. Heikka, E. I. Couse, Olaf Wieghorst, Henry Farny, and Frank Tenney Johnson. The Browning Firearms Collection and The Bison: American Icon, Heart of Plains Indian Culture round out the museum’s outstanding offerings.
